About

Clearwell Castle is a Grade I listed Gothic Revival country house nestled in Gloucestershire’s Royal Forest of Dean, esteemed as one of England’s earliest examples of the architectural style. Dating to the 15th century, the castle provides instant theatre, with storybook-style crenellated towers and arched windows in the backdrop of twenty acres of private parkland. Once a favoured hideaway of rock icons including Led Zeppelin and Queen, the castle has now won awards for its private, multi-day celebrations, granting couples exclusive use of its historic rooms and grounds. Ceremonies unfold in the grand Ballroom, where leaded-glass windows frame a 75-foot-long aisle and raised dais, or under the turreted hat of the Bandstand in the surround of manicured green. Afterwards, a formal wedding breakfast for 150 in the Ballroom, with its lancet windows and marble pillars, before festivities move up a notch at the Vaulted Cellar Bar. Accommodation spans stately suites and cottages, and just a short stroll away is The Wyndham, the castle’s own cosy country inn, where up to fifty of your party can decamp for a preamble the night before proceedings. The expertise of a designated wedding manager is included, alongside an acclaimed culinary team, ensuring every element of a wedding here is orchestrated with the precision and excellence fit for the occasion.

Testimonials

After visiting Clearwell, we fell in love with the venue and on the day, we fell in love with the staff. We could not have asked for a more idyllic location; the photos you see are incredible, but still do not do the venue justice. The staff took our day from great to perfect. We can’t wait to visit again.

Clearwell Castle is beautiful both inside and out. Our guests found their rooms to be straight out of a period piece like Pride and Prejudice, and loved the whole vibe of the castle. The staff really shined; the bar and serving staff were outstanding. ‘The best food I’ve ever had at a wedding,” one of our guests said the morning after.
