Set in 130 acres of Hampshire countryside on the edge of the New Forest, a few minutes’ walk from the sea, Chewton Glen is one of England’s great country house hotels. Two hours from London, it pairs 18th-century character with the ease of a modern five-star estate. For weddings, the choice of setting is the draw: couples can exchange vows in the walled garden, in the light-filled Morning Room, or in the Lake Suite, which seats up to 140 with its own terrace over the parkland. Smaller parties take the most romantic option – a ceremony among the treetops in one of the canopy Treehouse Suites, each with a private terrace and hot tub, which double as a secluded honeymoon base afterwards. Dining runs through The Dining Room and The Kitchen, the cookery school founded with James Martin, its menus built around the estate’s own produce. The award-winning spa, indoor and outdoor pools and croquet lawn fill the days on either side, and the whole estate can be taken on exclusive hire.
In an age where hotels are constantly trying to reinvent themselves, the refreshing thing about this five-star country escape is that it remains reassuringly classic; it’s a smart retreat with excellent service at its core.
